TLDR
When renting a scooter, Comprehensive Insurance is your best protection. It covers damage to your rental vehicle and other property—even if you’re at fault. Choosing only Third Party or relying on CTP can leave you with big out-of-pocket costs. This Doc explains why we include Comprehensive Insurance in every rental and how it protects you from expensive surprises.
Insurance
All our rental vehicles come with Comprehensive Insurance included, because we believe in protecting you—our customer—from the financial stress that can come from accidents, theft, or damage. While some companies might offer lower prices by only including basic insurance, those options often come with costly risks for renters.
Why Comprehensive Insurance Matters for Renters
As a renter, you don’t own the vehicle, but you’re still responsible for damage while it’s in your care. That’s why it’s crucial to have proper cover. Comprehensive Insurance is the only type that protects both you and the scooter in most situations, including:
- Accidental damage (even if you’re at fault)
- Collisions involving other vehicles or property
- Theft or fire
Without it, you could be liable for repairs, replacement costs, or third-party damage bills that easily run into thousands.
IMPORTANT:
Please check with your renting company if their insurance covers riding for Food Delivery platforms. Also check about the same in contract.
You don’t want to find out otherwise on a later date after the incident, as this could potentially result into a big out-of-pocket expense.
Comparing Types of Insurance
1. Comprehensive Insurance (Included in Your Rental)
- What It Covers: Everything above, plus damage to the rental scooter—even if it’s your fault. Also covers theft, fire, and accidental damage.
- What That Means: No massive repair bills, no stress.
- Verdict: Best and safest choice for renters. That’s why we include it.
2. Third Party Property Insurance
- What It Covers: Damage to someone else’s car or property if you’re at fault.
- What It Doesn’t: No cover for the rental scooter you’re using.
- What That Means: You could still be paying thousands for scooter repairs or replacement.
- Verdict: Better than CTP, but still not enough for renters.
3. Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance
- What It Covers: Only injuries or death to other people if you cause an accident.
- What It Doesn’t: No cover for property, scooters, or vehicles—including the one you’re renting.
- Why It’s Not Enough: If you cause an accident, you’ll pay for all scooter damage, repairs, and any third-party property damage out of pocket.
- Verdict: Never rely on CTP alone. It’s legally required, but not financially safe.
Why Some Companies Offer Cheaper Insurance (and Why That Can Cost You)
Some scooter rental companies advertise low weekly rates by offering Third Party Insurance only or just the minimum legal CTP cover. But what they don’t highlight is:
- You pay all repair or replacement costs for your rental vehicle if there’s an accident
- Excess fees are often extremely high
- Some exclude food delivery use entirely
- Claims take weeks—or go ignored
At Motion Rental, we don’t take shortcuts on insurance, because we’ve seen firsthand how riders suffer when they’re not properly covered.
Additional Rider Benefits with Motion Rental
- Fast Claim Processing: Claims handled in just 1 business day
- Replacement Vehicle (if available): So you can keep working while the claim is sorted
- No Hidden Exclusions: Our policy covers delivery riders too
- Roadside Assistance: Our policy covers Roadside Assistance for 15kms of towing
Tips to Stay Protected
- Always confirm that your use (e.g. food delivery) is covered.
- Avoid rental companies offering only Third Party or CTP insurance or fancy words like ‘Damage Cover’ which can be very misleading.
- Ask about excess fees, claim timeframes, and what happens if the scooter is written off.
What Is Insurance Excess?
Insurance Excess is the fixed amount you pay when making an insurance claim—kind of like a contribution towards the cost of the incident. The insurer covers the rest.
At Motion Rental:
- Our standard excess is low and fixed to reduce your risk.
- You only pay it if you’re involved in an accident or claimable incident.
- If you’re not at fault, we’ll help recover costs, and the excess may be refunded.
Some rental companies offer cheaper Rental Fee but with very high excess amounts (e.g., $2,500+), meaning you still face big costs during an accident. We keep ours transparent and renter-friendly.
Real-Life Example:
How Insurance Type Impacts You
Imagine you’re riding for food delivery and accidentally collide with a parked car. The damage includes:
- Repairing the rental scooter: $1,000
- Scratches to the other car: $2,000
With Our Comprehensive Insurance:
Total cost to you: Your Insurance Excess Amount (fixed).
If You Had Third Party Insurance:
- You pay $1,000 out-of-pocket for the rental scooter.
- Insurance covers the $2,000 for the other car (minus excess).
- Total cost to you: $1,000 + Insurance Excess.
If You Had CTP Only:
- You pay everything: $2,000 + $1,000.
- Total cost to you: $3,000.
Final Notes
When you’re renting, the cheapest insurance can become the most expensive during an accident. That’s why our rentals come with Comprehensive Insurance by default—no upgrade, no fine print. It protects you, your wallet, and your ability to keep riding with confidence.
